Beginner technique: Triplets and Straight Quarter notes?
on: May 15, 2011, 06:52:13 PM
I have been playing for a while however I have tought myself most of what I know. It seems that most of the music I listen to is learnable, except for when they use triplets with straight quarter notes. I can never seem to get the pattern right no matter how much I practice it. Is there a "trick" with this? Or is it really that hard. I'm open to your help.
Thanks

I use the words 'one cup of tea'. Tap out the rhythm in the image I've attached.
Both hands tap on beat 1, then beat 2 has two quavers, with right hand first then left hand, then the right hand taps on beat 3, and repeat lots of times. The right hand is tapping out three in the same time as the left is tapping out two. Practise it also the other way round so that the left is tapping three and right two, and at different speeds. Do it while walking around and doing other things so you really get the rhythm in your head. Then it's just a case of transferring it to the piano.

Okay, it's the first time I've attached an image. Maybe it didn't need to be quite that big.

I've got a very complicated way of doing this for more complicated polyrhythms like septuplets over triplets.
But that might be too advanced, looking at it this way always helped me for those in previous years.
with 3s over 4s:
*-(3/12)-*-(1/12)-*-(2/12)-*-(2/12)-*-(1/12)-*-(3/12)-*
* are notes
(x/y) is the time at that note
you play a regular quarternote, speed up to 3x speed, slow down to 2x speed, for two notes, then speed up to 3x speed and slow down to 1x speed.
There are tons of ways of looking at it but that worked allright for me. The more you look at it like a math problem the faster you'll be able to play it without thinking.

For practising this you might try the short opening piece from 'Glassworks" by Philip Glass - every bar is 2:3
