People who Hate Music
on: May 18, 2011, 06:56:59 PM
I posted this here because it doesn't relate to piano specifically, but music in general. Have any of you guys ever heard of anyone who hates music? I've met a couple people like that and I'm fascinated by what could make a person like that. I think it would be cool to sit down and talk to them and find out what makes them tick.

I don't practice. I call it play because I enjoy it. --A quote by Floyd Cramer.

Have you heard about amusia?

Well... i am not saying that a mental illness is the cause for such
disaster
However, it is an interesting fact. I wonder if amusic people can appreciate atonal music more than everyone, just because they are not as influenced by tonality as we are.....

I haven't met anyone myself who hates music.
I saw a clip -- Someone posted it on here somewhere -- A PBS special I think about people with music "gifts." Or unusual things they do with music. Like a guy with mental challenges who seems to be able to play anything back on the piano. Or maybe he was blind. It's probably in the "Did you know" thread.
I think there was one person on that documentary who heard music more as screeching. Something about music they couldn't stand. Or it made them physically sick to hear music. I'm not sure if that's amusia or not.
Most people I've heard about who don't like music had a bad experience with it. Although I can't really think of anyone who doesn't like music that I've ever run across. Everyone seems to like something about some style.
