"Bad-looking hands"
on: May 28, 2011, 09:13:19 AM
When I videotape my practice session, my hand does not look "good": not like other pianists I see on the Internet. The 1st (proximal) phalanges are somewhat parallel to the keys, while the wrist is pointing upwards (at 15-30 degrees); it looks absurd. But I never feel any discomfort playing in that hand position; in fact when I try to flatten my palm (so that it "looks" better) I feel a bit stressful and fast runs will sound rather messy and uneven.
The question is that, should I try to change my technique? A friend of mine says that my hands look "awful", but when playing (yes, Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu) it sounds OK.
- Chopin's Ballade No. 1 Op. 23
- Chopin's Ballade No. 4 Op. 52
- Chopin's Etude Op. 25 No. 12
- Czerny's Etude Op. 699 (740) No. 14
- Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata

Considering we can't see your hands as you play - it would be worth asking a piano teacher... maybe in person???

If they're relaxed they should look beautiful.

Have you seen Lang Lang's hands? OMG! They look like the thing that gets stuck on John Hurts face in Alien. Very weird.
And Glenn Gould's??? Lordy!
