Playing in heels? :P
on: May 31, 2011, 06:51:54 AM
So I haven't really thought about this much before, but is it okay to wear heels in performance?

I usually don't because flats are just so much more comfortable, but heels look quite nice with the dress I'm wearing next...:P

Would you advise against it or is it just a matter of personal preference? :)

I guess its OK, my friend does it, if you want to wear them and its your first time, try practicing your pedaling in heels and see if you;re comfortable in it... ;D

If you feel more comfortable in flats, then perform in flats.  If you prefer heels, then play in heels.

Some of my female friends prefer to perform in heels because the pianos are on a wheeling platform and so the pedals are a tad higher as a result, and the heel makes it feel a little closer to normal.  Other female friends of mine think it feels too unstable.  It's all a matter of preference.  Nobody is going to be paying attention to your footwear unless you walk on wearing flip flops or sneakers.

It's good to practise in the same shoes you'll be playing in so you get used to the feel of the pedal. Also, check that the piano is at a suitable height: I played at a wedding recently, and the piano was a 150-year-old Bechstein with a very low keyboard. Fortunately I had brought spare flat shoes with me but even in flats I could barely get my knees under.

Also some stages can be very slippery, so if you decide on heels, practice walking across the stage. (And if they are no shoes, scuff up the bottom a little.)
