Mistakes make us human?
on: June 06, 2011, 10:40:35 AM
Have you commited mistakes in a performance before?

Is it natural not to be totally flawless when you play either when you practice or during a performance?

Has it happened that despite all the practice you could still make mistakes in your performance?

Yes. Have a look to Horowitz performings and you will see mistakes  :) But if you learn carefully a piece and play it a lot of times and play it slowly the last time before your recital, the probability of mistakes diminishes a lot. Anf if you memorize all the sheet music before you begin to play it, probabilities of mistakes will diminish more and more. And if you only think in the music you are playing, abstracting all the other things, in your mind, then the probability of mistake is near zero.
Best wishes

Well, the only place I play in front of an actual crowd is at church and that's not really a performance, but I've seen the best piano players or other musicians mess up occasionally.  When I played classical in college, I definitely hit some interesting notes during performance class.  I guess the trick is just to keep going and pray they don't notice, except your piano teacher will always catch it.  I get really aggravated when I mess something up because I'm sort of a perfectionist.
I don't practice.  I call it play because I enjoy it. --A quote by Floyd Cramer.

Usually I don't make too much mistakes at home but at my teacher's place I much more mistakes. So I just try to imagine that I'm just at home practicing my piano, which actually helps me play better.
So to answer the question, yes we all are prone to mistakes, even pianists though they may make only 1 or 2 mistakes only. Mistakes are part of the learning process. When people make a mistake they will just experiment ways to avoid that mistake.
Funny? How? How am I funny?
