Returning to the music I have abandoned
on: June 09, 2011, 09:13:20 AM
Hi,

I am new to this forum and and seeking advice from those who have been in similar shoes. I disliked playing piano in my younger days, as a result quitted piano playing after obtaining Grade 8 practical pass. 14 yrs on, I am re-discovering my love for music and wish to start playing again. I am thinking of doing a refresher course (have forgotten most of music theory) and perhaps may consider doing a diploma when I am more confident. Are there such courses in Singapore or recommended materials for me to re-learn piano again? If not, what are the other ways I can pick up piano playing as I am also working full time?
Will appreciate any advice.

Sorry,I live in the UK. My advice is to get some Bach inventions, hanon and other pieces to get you going. Your fingers will not be as flexible as the were therefore you will need to warm them up and exercise them. Learn pieces that are a little below grade 8 first before you raise the bar. Then get a bit of repertoire under your belt. After that, then go for your diploma. I'm in the same boat but I did a level music on 1989 then did  engineering at uni amd left classical music until recently due to no piano at uni but o played in church services in the meantime. Enjoy the journey. Greg.

I live in Singapore, but I don't have any courses that I can regcomend(I have forgotten how to spell). Maybe you should find some local pianists and ask them for lessons. But, of course, do listen--- listening is the key.Listen to the voice, it'll help you. ;) Try doing Schmitt.Ah, and Chopin. ;D wish you the best!

I live in Indonesia, however I can't really say.
You might need to refresh your fingerings by trying hanon or schmitt.

If you think your hands are good enough, you should try Hanon No. 60 (Yes, the last one). If you can manage that speed and manage to finish it without any pauses, then you're ready for some REAL Pieces.

Start off at the easy ones first though. I doubt your hand can handle hard pieces out of a sudden (Unless you play sloooooooooow). I'D recommend starting from something intermediate (not too beginning, duh your hands are MORE than capable for it), Bach's Inventions sounds good for me. When you're ready, try switching to Bach's Sinfonias, or something else at the same level. If you like Bach, after Sinfonia I think it's best for you to try Fugues first before you play Partitas. It's just my recommendation.
