Don't be so condescending. It's a perfectly valid post, it's just impossible to answer due to beauty being entirely in the eye of the beholder. I'm assuming the poster is referring to the most beautiful piece in each person's opinion. Still a difficult one to answer, there are many, many 'most beautiful' pieces.

When I first clicked this, I was actually going to say what a great idea for a thread!

It should be pretty clear that it is meant to be "in your opinion" and not definitive.

Of course it's hard to say but impulsively I will say:

Ernest Chausson Piano Trio Op. 3

Yes, I meant personal opinion. We all have our own tastes. Yes, there's no possible way to decide on one piece- there are far too many. I listed three and I still feel guilty for leaving some out! I am always very interested to see what other people enjoy. It always shocks me when someone tells me that they dislike a piece that is one of my favorites.

I can't imagine that this is a childish post. What's wrong with people discussing beautiful pieces of piano literature on a piano forum? Personally I believe that you are the childish one for dismissing a perfectly valid post in such a rude, cynical, and condescending way.

Naumdar- I'm sorry to say that I have never heard that piece! I am going to see if I can find it on youtube.

Interested to see what everybody thinks.

Spencer, I envy you for getting to hear it for the first time :) Chausson has become my absolute favorite composer, and I never thought I would even be able to say that. I also think he is highly underrated.

I highly suggest the Beaux Arts Trio playing it - I believe it is on youtube (Which I can't access at this computer otherwise I would provide a link.)

I'll add another candidate which I am sure would be a popular choice:

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2

I like that piece very much! Thank you for introducing me! I would agree with the Rach concerto. Beautiful piece.

Another post on this forum has just put me in mind of the Mozart D-minor concerto, which is a pretty good contender.

Totentanz? Dance of death? Isn't that a rather morbid choice?

 ;)

Even assuming that we're talking only about piano pieces, not all beautiful piano pieces are beautiful in the same way. For that reason, I wouldn't like to say "most beautiful" but I certainly think that the slow movement of the Shostakovich's second piano concerto is very beautiful.

For solo pieces, I find the E minor fugue from the Shostakovich Preludes & Fugues very beautiful. Also the Aria from the Goldberg Variations.

Odd that I should give two examples from Shostakovich, as "beauty" is pretty much the last thing he is known for.

Oh, and this is my first forum post, so hello to you all.
In the interests of full disclosure: I do not play the piano (at all).

Hello Sordel !

I used to be obssessed with that movement of the concerto! I need to find it again, it is actually very easy and you are right very beautiful. Great contribution.

Speaking of "beautiful in it's own way" - I have recently become obssessed with Sibelius' Ten Pieces for Piano Op. 24.

It's so hard to get "most beautiful" as we all know, but I think the value in this thread is more along the lines of "this is definitely one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard" and so far I am enjoying the contributions!
