common misconceptions my students share
on: June 18, 2011, 07:59:56 AM
I find my students believe these things to be so true that when I finally convince them they are wrong it is a very liberating experience for them.

hard to read does not always mean hard to play--too many examples of this in the rep. students will actually make it harder by tensing their hands if the music "looks" hard.

the black keys can be easier to play on than the white keys--it's super easy to improvise on the naturally occurring pentatonic scale, even for students.

trust your ears over your eyes--your eyes lie, a trained ear always tells it like it is.  i. e. notated music can contain mistakes especially these days with all this internet music they download and bring in. if your eye sees a G but your ear hears a G# chances are your ear is correct but you will still play that G a few times before you're convinced of it.  ;)

anyone else out there find this to be true?

I largely agree but I think that's a little bit of a risky one though. It's all too easy to assume a misprint after you've made the same misreading a few times and finally noticed. The problem can sometimes occur in reverse too.
