Ildebrando Pizzetti

I have never heard anything by this composer before today, but since the weather was horrid I decided to do some filing and found the score to his Canti Della Stagione Alta. I did not think he had been discussed here before, but a search indicated he had and this work was mentioned by Richard Black.

The recording of this has left me in almost a state of shock, as it has been a long time since I have heard a work that is as beautiful and so full of colour. The man must have been an expert craftsman, especially with regards to his orchestration, and this work even has Rachmaninov type touches, although it is far from a virtuoso concerto.

Has anyone any experience of this composer and could suggest further listening especially for piano solo works.

Dear Thal,
Pizzetti is a composer that deserves greater attention. I knew his music in a research, years ago, about Italian piano music of the 20th century. Particularly his sonata grabbed my attention. Among other CDs I have with his music, this one will interest you: Complete Piano Works, played by Marco Vincenzi (CDS119). By the way, the label - Dynamics - is a jewel, with a catalogue full of lesser known composers and works. Since it is Italian (as far as I know), there are a lot of composers and performers from the country.

It reminds me another CD that might interest you, with some piano works by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (CDS181). I think you can have a few preview of both CDs on the Naxos Music Library.

Best regards,
Jay.
