Wanting to learn piano and need some help!
on: June 21, 2011, 07:03:05 PM
Hey guys I'm pretty new to this forum and just looking for some help. I've played guitar for around 2 1/2 years. I really like blues and jazz, I've played a couple of bands and am currently in my school jazz band. And now that's its summer I thought I'd try to learn something on my mom's grand piano that just sits there. But I'm totally sure what to practice as I don't really listen to too many piano players and I was just looking for someone to point me in the right direction.
I've been practicing a little bit each day (an hour or so) on some Hanon exercises, reading some music from this beginner book, learning some chords and scales, and just some simple coldplay songs.
Basically I just wanted to know any specific things I should practice, listen, or look at to get me going to becoming better!
Thanks

I`m a pianist of classic music and I cant play jazz, so I dont know if this helps to you. But if you have no teacher and wish to learn some piano technique, I suggest you download "the groundwork of the Leschetizky method, by Malwine Brée. It`s a little book with exercises, supported by 47 photos exemplifying the correct technique.
After one or two months, you will be able to play music instead of exercises.
By the way, I belong to the group of members of this forum who think that Hanon is not useful. And without a teacher he may be harmful to your technique and to your hands health. You may read the hundreds of posts about Hanon - pro and against him - in this forum. writing Hanon in the right upper corn of this page and clicking in "search"
Best wishes

Get yourself a beginner's book, and I'm a stay-away-from-hanon member too.
