Hmmmm... Schumann was still alive when those were composed (1854). He even sent a letter to Brahms from the asylum praising the work.

But what about the Schumann variations op. 23, composed in 1861?

I know Ballade was already stated but was it the 1st one "Edward" in D minor? In the original ballad edward kills his father, his mothers spouse.

Seeing that this one has gone for much too long of a time, and people seem  to start losing interest, and you are nowhere near the right track, Ill give you another crytpic statement:

The fact that the origin of the piece stemmed from the spouses death is a little known fact uncovered recently by the investigations of famous musicologist Morimur.

The piece is the transcription for left hand of Bach's D minor Chaconne for violin - a piece that German musicologist Helga Thoene claims it was composed as a funeral hommage to Maria Barbara, Bach's first wife.

So the man Brahms had great admiration for was J. S. Bach. The dead spouse who was also a relative is his cousin Maria Barbara.

I rest my case.

(And if I'm wrong, I still have one more chance, right? ;))
