on: June 28, 2011, 02:52:24 PM
I'm 15 years old and started to play piano in the middle of last year when i was 14.
I spend almost all my time in front of the piano but is it all for granit ?
Am i to old to become a preformer , Next year i wanna start to study music.

Why do you feel being a performer is the highlight of music learning? There are many occupations in music besides being a concert pianist.  It may lead you to be a producer, composer, conductor, teacher, musical engineer.

Your potential of achievement is only bound by your imaginations. If that is what you want to do then you should go for it. People who have been playing since they were 3 or 4 and different musical experiences will of course have an advantage over you but talent and "potential " means nothing without hard work.

Anything is possible, really. There are a lot of people that make a living off of music! But then there are a lot more people that don't. I have been playing for 11 years, and I don't think I'm that much better off than you are as far as that goes. Still, it's always good to keep your options open.
Even so, it's never too late to start studying music! And it's certainly not a waste of time if you don't have a music career or anything like that. It's extremely rewarding.
And keep composing, the world can always use more music!

It goes for anybody that if you are generally superhuman --controlling the weather, not in need of sleep, still a fetus, the most profound musician in the world, talented beyond belief in life in general, gorgeous, and can fly-- then it can be done.  If you are not any and especially ALL of those things, don't even consider it.

Lol wow. You have to be superman to be a concert pianist? Really?

There are some pianists who got serious about piano later. Harold Bauer is one but the standards of getting on a concert was probably different.  There is a kid in a high school around here who had the opportunity to play at Carnagee Hall, so I don't know if you would call them a concert pianist.

My teacher ( who is a concert pianist) said it has to do with talent, hard-work,luck, experience, and contacts. Knowing people who book concerts, winning competitions and being in the right place at the right time is a factor once you have the playing down.  I think if you have the ability then the contacts can be developed but I wouldn't know honestly.

Well being that he has the power to move really fast maybe he could speed up the process and learn repertoire really fast (hopefully not Hanon)lol. But then again he might break the piano so that might not be the best choice for him. ;D

That's true.  So, he might be able to claim the learner of repertoire the fastest the world has ever known, however, his age is more the issue that he would not be marketable, since he looks fairly older than 1 month old  :-.  Tough break, loser Superman.

What is the difference to be a performer or a composer?
How can you decide to be either one?

Well, don't give up entirely.  I mean, why not spend your entire life fighting the law of gravity and learning to fly, so that you may finally live in the heavens with a concert career?  :P
