Is my creation useful for beginners?
on: June 29, 2011, 09:25:46 AM
I'm a beginner piano student, and when I say beginner, I mean it! I've been studying the piano for about 1 month, so I only have a few basic concepts. I always try to learn things in a visual way, I mean, learn by visual correlation. In that spirit I made the PDF file I attached to this post and I was wondering... would my creation help other beginners like me? Is there something I could do with it to improve it? Should I put some more information ? (in this case, what information?). I'll read every response and apply the ideas to my PDF. Originally I was going for something I could print and place it near the piano, so I could check it at any time. Well, that's it. Thank you.

Remember people, this is for BEGINNERS (people that recently started to study the piano).

I get what this means, you're showing what key correlates to what note on paper, but it can get confusing since it looks like the C key across one entire octave is covered by one physical key on the piano (when its not, it's covered by 2 keys which you might want to add). Like, the following:

Notice middle C to the next C one octave up are played by 2 completely different keys (but yes they both appear left of the set of 2 black keys for visual memory).

Actually I see what Leowr.. is doing and I think I agree with it.  D is any white key between the two black keys - F is any white key to the left of the three black keys - etc.  He is remembering two things: the names of a specific note in two places in the treble clef, and then where that note can be found anywhere on the keyboard.  This could be useful.

Is "Si" another way of singing "Ti"? Or is that a typo?

Some beginning students think that they can play any C they want when it is clearly middle C. I explain to them that the note between the staves with the line through it is middle C - and ONLY MIDDLE C. Each line and space on the staff corresponds with one white key on the entire piano. Only one. That way, the player will always know EXACTLY which key is meant to be played.

I think it's important for them to understand that. Am I wrong?

I looked at it again and can see how it can be helpful for beginners. Especially for visual learners, they can associate certain lines and spaces with the letter keys they represent. Picturing what the key looks like, its shape and relation to other keys might be useful to some. Students should nevertheless understand that different C's on a staff rerpresent different C's on the piano.

Its the way we name the notes in Brazil

C = Dó
D = Ré
E = Mi
F = Fá
G = Sol
A = La
B = Si

Actually, "Ti" is a typo. Sancte Iohannes is not written with a capital T.  ;D

Read my post
Dear Country,
I did read it before and, relax, I'm joking about the Ti, not saying that Si is a typo.

Nevertheless, you must know that do re mi fa sol la si is not portuguese, but the french version for the original latin, right?

Best regards,
Jay.
