What was the very first piece you preformed live on a stage?

I can't remember, but I do recall what was the first time I played the piano on a recital: Schumann's Dichterliebe.
Best regards,
Jay.

Fernando Sor's Variations on a Theme from the Magic Flute. Being just a classical guitarist at the time and knowing little about non-guitar music or music in general, it was the best I could do.

For piano: Greensleeves, Chopsticks, Edelweiss when I was around 4/5 at an elderly care unit in my hometown.

I don't remember this whatsoever, but apparently when I was 3 I taught myself the Bach Minuet in G from an electric keyboard and performed it for the piano professor at a local university after he agreed to give me a few lessons. I had some more lessons with him when I was 5, and 2 years ago I started taking violin lessons with his wife. Since then he occasionally gives me lessons supplemental to those with my regular teacher and has really helped me to grow as a musician.

As in the first "piece" (as in classical), not a "song"? That would have to be Schumman's Aufschwung.

I never performed in a hall or anything fancy, but I performed in front of parents' friends. Ha, and I only performed Chopin's Nocturne in C # minor. Only the first page, too. But I felt talented, even though at 13, so many Asians are doing etudes like they are routine. :'(
Working on:
Bach Invention 7 (also Tureck's book)
Clementi Sonatina 3
Rachmaninoff Moment Musicaux no. 3
Skrjabin Prelude op.11 no.4
Joplin The Favorite Rag

I think it's just a culture. Asian children in general are pushed more by their parents from a young age. There is no difference in actual ability. Horowitz performed Rach 3 at 13 if I'm not mistaken. Now THAT's amazing. Some other pianist performed a complete cycle of Liszt etudes at 13 as well. Anyone know who that was? I think it was Clarudio Arrau. What I find truly spectacular is the fact that Yundi Li won the international Chopin competition at age 18. I wonder what he played. I think he played the second Scherzo for one.

However, there is some scientific base to the statement that those who speak languages similar to mandarin have an advantage in sight reading ability. It has something to do with the way the language works and the way we process musical notes on a page. Interesting stuff.

Liebestraume No .3 is Difficult , It's easy to start of with .. but after a while it starts to be more difficult..
But im not good at playing Liszt , i'm better at playing Beethoven and Johann Burgmüller.
I'm not soo good at Mozart neither.

Kabelevsky's toccata in d-minor if I'm not mistaken.  My nerves kicked in I was sweating before I got to the piano and played it way to fast just to get it over with.

My first performance piece was The Entertainer, by Scott Joplin (Ragtime)
It is the music of the film called The Sting
Learning:
Liszt's 3rd Liebestraum

Some grade 3 piece hornpipe in e minor. I was 7 at the time and it was a school concert. I was told that my public playing encouraged quite a few Afro Carribeans in the area (East Ham, London) to send their kids to piano lessons (1979). :)

Fur Elise, at a concert in school. The building had a large hall where all classes could gather (all in all 6 grades). I think I was 9 or 10.

Horowitz performed the Rach 3 in 1920. He was 17 years old. Not that it isn't a colossal achievement. He also played a monster of a solo program in 1920, just check out the Horowitz site.

I've heard the same thing, but that it would be good for your hearing. They have quite many words which gets completely different meanings, if you phrase it differently.

Right- very interesting stuff. The language itself is very musical in a way.
