making mozart "interesting"!
on: August 24, 2004, 10:11:13 AM
hi everyone!
well on going through the posts here, one can see lots of discussions about chopin, rach, prokofiev, beethoven but poor mozart always seems to lose out!
I feel that we should now, shut out all the so called 'rules' that people emphasize on while playing mozart such as not making too many contrasts etc. Make Mozart like Beethoven and see what fun it can become! After all, it is better to play it differently and like it than to play it ""correctly"" and hate it!!!!!
What do u think?

hum... I remember playing the e minor sonata (violin-piano) phrasing the whole thing as if it was some Tchaikovsky piece!

It was funny!  But don't expect high marks in exams...

See, this proves how unpopular Mozart is! Just one reply to this post in a week!
Coming to your comments Maxy, I said that Mozart can be played like Beethoven, DEFINITELY NOT CHOPIN OR TCHAIKOVSKY, just get those big contrasts and a bit of tension and it becomes very exciting. Hopefully we'll get to hear the others' comments on this.

There was a pretty long thread I started some time ago called "Im sick of the Mozart bashing".... read it and youll see what many people here (other than me) think of Mozart.... so many trained piano monkeys, wouldn´t know good music if it bit them in the ass. You know who you are!
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)

Can be played like Beethoven....   I doubt it!
Beethoven did find Mozart's phrasing quite "chunky"...
Conception on interpretation quite different between these 2 composers.

Mozart is great BTW!

Mitsuko Uchida makes Mozart beautiful, not just interesting.

Referring to Maxy's doubts whether it can be played like Beethoven, why not?? Don't hesistate to make contrasts and you'll end up with something sounding very much like Beethoven but still having the Mozart flavour. If you want, I can record a bit myselft playing like Beethoven. See how wonderful it sounds!

oh mozart's cool i like his concertos and symphonies. but i prefer letting each composer having their own flavour and thus for me, mozart shall remain mozart and beethoven shall remain beethoven

Exactly. Mozart is great to listen to as it is.

I think that my question has been misunderstood!
First of all, it is for those who accuse Mozart of being dull and boring (sometimes rightly), especially in many of the sonatas. Of course his symphonies were great, but my question refers to his piano music, in particular the sonatas!
Those who like Mozart the way it is, fine! But, those who don't might well play it without the so called 'rules' and see how dramatic it can become! Remember, that just by phrasing it differently and giving more contrasts, Mozart REMAINS Mozart. Its just that you add a new dimension to it and give it the necessary impetus that it sometimes lacks.
The idea behind this question was to get some interest going in Mozart! I just see Chopin, Liszt, Rach., Prokofiev, etc. being discussed largely!

but i like mozart sounding like mozart! if i wanted to hear something played like beethoven then i'd go and listen to beethoven. i agree that mozart sonatas are not great to play but i like listening to them, and if they were played in some dramatic manner i think i might get a little scared and be like what have you done to mozart

You took the words out of my mouth...  she is the quintessential Mozart player.  I think a lot of it has to do with her choice of piano and the timbre of her recordings also.

How about recordings of Ingrid Haebler...
Can't get any better for articulation in Mozart.
