Little Richard at age 79
on: July 05, 2011, 04:39:29 PM
Anybody see Little Richard (Penniman) play piano and sing on the US National Forth of July Celebration on the Mall on PBS last night. He was preceded by a bunch of ringers from a Broadway show covering Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, so I had my doubts about him, he looks as young as me. But wikipedia says he is still alive, he got top billing on the promos, I think it was really him. Playing, live. Rip it UP! Richard.
Pine Top Perkins was still performing in his late nineties, the guy that recorded Pine Top Boogie Woogie in 1952. He died this year at 99. My Mother had that record.
I hope the secret is that piano playing keeps the heart moving, I intend to get better as I age instead of fading away, unless cancer or a car wreck gets me. I'm 61, only forty more years to practice.

A friend of mine, Joe Baque (great name for a pianist!) is still going strong at 88! He says he's never had a 'real' job, has just done music his entire life. Started in NY as a young teen. Also lays Vibes and Accordian with incredible ease. How old was Horowitz when he left us?
Take care of your instrument and you'll play your entire life too!
