Recordings of Copin Etudes
on: August 24, 2004, 06:26:49 PM
i know this is a common thread, but i'll ask my question anyway. I am interested in getting a recording of the complete chopin etudes, and I haven't much idea of who's recording to purchase.

I have heard that Perahia's recording is good, so thats a start...

If any of you could either give me some recommendations or direct me to another thread where this same question has undoubtedly already been discussed.

Thank you.

I do not know about previous threads but for me, my recommendation would be the Alfred Cortot's mono recording and also Vladimir Ashkenazy's earlier ones.

This would be a link to another forum. Well there is a discussion started by myself on the recordings of Chopin's etudes

Hope this helps

I like Cziffra's recording the most.  There are so many brilliant moments I only hear in his recordings.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions.

I was looking at Ashkenazy's recordings of the etudes + 3 sonatas + fantasie by chopin, released as a two disc set. I read some good reviews...is this the recording he made in 1960 (the supposedly better one), or a later recording?
I think I will probably get this one (its cheap, has two discs, and is by Ashkenazy).

I have  Ashkenazy's. Its very plain and true to the score in comparison with Cziffry's. Ashekenazy sounds musical intelligent while Cziffry sound rich and stunning.

Personally I prefer Godowskys versions of the etudes played by Hamelin. They sound much richer and more colorfull than the original.

My favorite is Gavrilov's EMI recording, his playing is relentless but not reckless.  (The CD also includes a couple of the Ballades, so that's a plus.)

I also like Arrau's interpretation, though it took a while to get past the poor recording quality.

Frederick Chiu totally rethinks them, and definitely the most original and refreshing in my taste.  (I think he only recorded op.10, tho.)

And yes, Hamelin's Godowskys are a madman.

i really like the recordings of Maurizio Pollini...plays them extremely well with flawless technique

i also like Boris Berezovsky's rendition, some (like Opus 10 No. 4) he plays at a relaxed pace...but if for no other reason, he may have the best recording of Opus 25 No. 12...be sure to check that track out...awesome

Are you kidding?  I think his recording is the worst of all Etudes I've heard.  Try John Browning, Yukio Yokoyama.  They are pretty good.

Nope. Go hear it for yourself. He give the most heart melting rendition of 10/2 i've ever heard.

John Rusnak is the Florence Foster Jenkins of the piano.  What an honour.

I like Ashkenazy's and Backhaus' recordings of the complete etudes.

Another one that I find very interesting and musical is Earl Wild's.

Separately recorded etudes recorded by Joseph Lhevinne are worth study if you can get them--his "Winter Wind," and "Double-3rd's" etudes are amazing.
