Zimerman's latest recordings of the Chopin concertos are, speaking very subjectively, great and visionary music making. While a bit more objectively I would say that they are very special interpretations. They are special for the freest use rubato, slow tempos, huge volume contrasts and unusual attention to details (some even describe these treatments as "operatic" for the drama they present). I am reminded of Mengelberg's recording listening to these recordings.
To different people these can mean good things or bad thing, though, again, in my opinion, no one else has every revealed Chopin's concertos as such masterpieces by such ingenious means. But besides the technical things, there should be no denying the deep passion and power Zimerman and his orchestra plays with. This is what essentially makes their Chopin so compelling.
