Music with a "swing" rhythm
on: July 17, 2011, 09:53:55 PM
I recently listened to Beethoven's 32nd sonata, op. 111. I was a huge fan of the "swinging" dotted rhythm pattern in the second movement. Does anyone know of any other music in this style written by a renowned classical composer?

I doubt Beethoven had a time machine and was able to see into the future of ragtime and early jazz and brought it back with him. He was merely messing around with dotted rhythms and syncopations within the realm of variation. That said, you can see elements of that sort of thing all throughout that period, just in nowhere near as much of a sustained amount. That is what makes that Beethoven sonata so special. It is such a delicate work (in that particular movement), but he hits you over the head with that variation, and yet it all works out very well.

Contrapunctus 2 of die kunst der fuge. A lot of baroque music is performed with notes inégales, which gives it a bit of a swing feeling.
