Piano beginner (need help urgently)
on: July 25, 2011, 03:54:50 AM
Hi all pianist,

First, please forgive me for asking a very basic and silly question.

I have just started my piano lesson lately.

My teacher teachs me : "music scale (symbols); "music note (C,D,E,F,G,A,B etc)"; fingering (1-5).

My question and confusion: -

While trying to play a piece of music, shall i interprete the music scale (symbols) into :
- music note like C,D,E or
- fingering position like 1,2,3
to play the music?

Many thanks in advance.

It depends on what the piece goes through, just because you play C major scale starting with RH 1 doesn't mean that every time you play part of the C major scale the C always has to be the thumb, or 5th as in the end of the scale.

If a piece was written like..
CBCDEF for RH you would play 212345

If it where:
CBCDEFG you would probably play 1212345

If a group of notes is played and then you need to leap to a higher or lower position, your fingering may have to change to allow for it.
CDE E'   where E to  E' defines an octave up interval, you would use 1215.

We can just keep writing permutations after permutations of patterns but it is best to see it in the pieces you are playing. We always strive to play positions without having to move our hands unnecessarily, when we move we ensure that we move to a new position where we can maintain a group of notes and not just consider the individual notes separate to the hand position.

Welcome Tonyy,
Your teacher is showing you the relation between notes and fingering in a basic way for general purposes. Once you become more comfortable with what goes where you'll be able to find the needed fingering for a piece. Just like building two different houses. The structure may change but the fundamental foundation is the same.
Good luck...
