Let's make the most of whatever piano!
on: January 10, 2003, 03:35:31 AM
Sometimes we can become obsessive (myself too) about the make and kind of piano we have.  Of course most of us want to have a beautiful piano because it is the instrument we love and  we want our playing to sound wonderful.

However, it can be like the hi fi freak who  listens more to the quality of the sound of his hi fi equipment rather than the music that is being reproduced.
More important than the kind of piano we have is our love of the music and playing with artistry and integrity. Bad playing on the most magnificent of pianos will always be bad playing.

I believe that Chopin and Debussy did much of their composing and  playing on the modest upright piano.

Provided the piano we have is kept well in tune and is well voiced and regulated and  we should all be able to derive much delight from our  playing whatever  the make and kind of instrument.

So for the great majority of us who do not have the best concert
grand let's make the most of the piano we have and enjoy...

Robert.

Yes, keep it tuned. At least once a year.

Yes, absolutely at least once a year even if the piano is not being played.
Cheers,
Robert.

Hmm,

I don't have an inferiority complex for having an upright piano. I guess I just don't know the "scene". I hope there's a cure for this.

Well, the *whatever* piano I am now making the most of is a Baldwin acrosonic spinet that is getting very close to falling apart altogether.  I am now one of those *obsessed* with the sound and brand of grand pianos.  It's a whole bunch of fun, and when I pick one, I will feel like I play better even if everyone else knows I don't.

I'm not sure I care.

I completely agree with you, the instrument and the type of piano has a very big role and there is a difference between expensive pianos and low-price pianos , I noticed this in a video I just saw : https://ohmondieu.ovh/un-pianiste-teste-plusieurs-pianos-pour-entendre-la-difference/
