Hi all,

While I am waiting to figure out if they are going to go down in price on a Bösi 225 I have been checking out, I was thinking of alternatives, and found an ad for a 1898 Steinway B, rebuilt by Steinway, with a reasonable price. This is not a fancy art case, but a satin black, very straight-forward case. It is at a dealer in the mid-west.

The only thing I could think wrong with this (photos show evidence of a true, complete rebuild) is that it still has the old-fashioned action. So here is my question: When Steinway themselves rebuild a piano, do they swap out the action for an accelerated one? This piano has 88 keys. The black keys look to me to be original.

Thanks?

Under normal situations the action is replaced in referbs. Especially that age...

Now it turns out it's not a Steinway rebuild....

I am putting this on the backburner, though I will check it out a little further.

Thanks for the reply!

Doesn't have to be a Steinway rebuild to be a good rebuild. Great piano restorers are Steinways biggest competitor in the pre owned market. It really just has to be done right.

To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
