Which scales are these? Which key signatures to use?
on: August 06, 2011, 03:31:16 AM
Hallo dear members of the forum.
Can you guys help me out? I need to know in which scales these notes are, in order to chose the right key signature when i write down my melodies. I hope you can help me out.
1 C# D# F G G# A# C C#
2 C# D E F# G# A B C#
3 C# D F F# G# A C C#
4 C# D# F F# G# A# C C# (this is C sharp major scale, isn't it?)
5 C# D# E F# G# A# B C#
6 C#D# E F# G# A B C# (C sharp minor?)
7 C# D# F F# G# A# B C#
8 C# D F G G# A# C C#
9 C# D F G G# A C C#
10 C# D E G G# A C C#
These are the 10 basic scales used in Hindustani classical music. I write melodies based on these scales, but i have no idea which key signature to use for these scales when i write them down.

1) Respelled as Db Eb F G Ab Bb C Db. This is (from the Western perspective) lydian mode. 4 flats in Db.
2) C# D E F# G# A B C#. This is phrygian mode. 3 sharps.
3) There is no Western equivalent to this mode and no key signature is really going to describe it. You could write it in 7 sharps and use naturals for the D and A perhaps.
4) Respelled as C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C#. Yes that's the major. 7 sharps. Or Db major, 5 flats would work also.
5) C# D# E F# G# A# B C#. This is dorian mode. 5 sharps.
6) C# D# E F# G# A B C#. Yes, that's minor. 4 sharps.
7) Respelled as C# D# E# F# G# A# B C#. Mixolydian mode. 6 sharps.
8, 9, 10) Like 3 these scales aren't of European origin and don't really fit any key signature so you will have to make do with accidentals.
