Is this a good deal for a used piano?
on: August 09, 2011, 01:58:37 AM
On Friday I went to a piano sale. I found a used 2003 Yamaha U1. It was being offered for 4900.00 which covered the instrument itself, a new bench (previous owner kept the one that came with the piano), delivery, and a tuning in 2 months.

I love the piano, but I am not sure if this a good deal or not. This is the first piano I have purchased. I asked the dealer to hold it, he agreed, but I need to make a decision by tomorrow.

Hard to tell, really. I see older mint refurbished for sale, ca. mid 80's for low to mid 3's. I guess its ballpark since its less than 10 years old. If its a dealer, I'd offer 25% less. There is no such thing as a piano sale. The sale is somewhere in the middle of what they would take as an offer at any time. My piano was 8900 at one dealer, 10.5 at another, offered to me for 6900 at another. I walked with it for 5400. Don't fall for the "I need an answer by tomorrow" line. That piano is not rushing out of the showroom and if it does, you'll find another. If you get that piano for a grand less, they are still making a huge profit.

keys60 makes a good point, and it bears repeating ... because people too often don't take heed. There's SOOOOO much markup in the list price (and even in the "sale" price) ... you really must make your offer very LOOOOOOOOOWWWW. If the dealer accepts an offer, then the offer was too high!
