Cable for connecting my electric piano to a PA system.
on: August 09, 2011, 09:02:46 PM
This is my first post here, so i apologize if i posted this in the wrong part of forum
I just purchased a Korg SP170 electric piano. A cheap beginners keyboard.
The outputs on this are 2x mini jack (headphones).
Is my only option to use a plug(= Mini jack to Female jack) and a regular jack cable ?
And how will this effect the quality of the sound?

I don't like mini-jack adaptor plugs, they are too easily damaged (or, worse, they can damage what they plug into). My solution would be to get a mini-jack to RCA phono plug cable (RCA phono is the type of connector found on almost all modern domestic hi-fi equipment, also called a 'cinch plug' or simply 'phono plug' depending on where in the world you are). Most PA equipment has mono full-size (quarter-inch/6.3mm) jack sockets, so you will need two phono-socket-to-jack plug adaptors. All these things should be easy enough to come by from electronics good stores.

They make socket-to-jack adapters to use whatever you have. I have one on my PSR that allows me to use a regular guitar chord going to my amps...
The two sockets you have, are they for two headphones or just left and right of one?

just for the sake of completing the discussion...
I did check the specs on the sp170 and was quite surprised to find out that it indeed does NOT have quarter inch outs.
even with a mini 1/8th output, you should be fine. You can use adapters to convert to almost any standard size. Stereos will generally take RCA inputs, while most regular amplifiers will take quarter inch.
If you are connecting to a true PA, may need a balanced XLR input. (mic cable) I dont believe you will be able to find 1/8th to XLR.... in which case you would have to go 1/8th to quarter, and take the quarter into a DI box (direct box) or a small rack mixer of your own (invaluable if you are using multiple keyboards) which will both have a balanced XLR output allowing a regular mic cable or snake connection back to the board and the PA.
