Need advise with Scarlatti's sonata K27 L449
on: August 10, 2011, 03:57:39 PM
Greetings,

I make this post because I'm having a bit of an uncertainty about sonata K27 by Scarlatti.
I have found 2 different version of this piece (added in attachment).
The first one is the, I assume, unedited one and the 2nd one clearly edited.
Now here is the problem, it's not just pedal markings and phrasing slurs but also notes..
I like to do things right so I'm look for someone with enough theoretical knowledge to tell me which one I should learn.

What I noticed on the first page: (I'll call the first version A and second one B)
Bar 8 first beat:  (A)Bass: B, Treble: F+D - (B)Bass: B+B, Treble: D
Bar 11 first beat: (A)Bass: A, Treble: nothing - (B)Bass: A, Treble: C
Bar 13: first beat:(A)Bass: nothing, Treble: E - then it goes: A-C-E while in (B)Bass: A, Treble: E - then it goes C-A-C
> This seems like a major difference to me.

My opinion about this:
1.version A: At bar 11 it starts with that theme where the nuance is on the right hand, then at bar 13 the nuance goes to the left hand - the flow is broken by changing the pattern of the notes
2.version B: Plain repetition for 7 bars - no alternation about bringing out the middle notes or bottom-top notes - note pattern of right hand does NOT change.

My guess is that musically version (A) offers more, however when I listen to recordings it is version (B) I'm hearing most of the time - this bringing me here since I don't have extended musical knowledge certainly not about barok music.

I really hope someone can tell me which is the more correct one.

Thanks for your help
Best regards
Carl H.

I have the "B" second version of this sonata. As you said, the first beat of the eight bar is B+B in bass clef and D on treble clef. I feel the 2nd version is more correct. Generally, the second version of pieces composed is played. For example, Liszt composed three versions for La Campanella, but only the third version is played today. In the same way, I think you should play the second version of the Sonata.

Have fun.
