dohnanyi exercises
on: August 28, 2004, 06:55:44 PM
Does anybody here have any experiences with the Dohnanyi exercises?

There was another topic about this. I've been doing the excercises for about a week, and they are phenominally helpful. I was surprised at how much difficulty I had with the easiest of excercises in there, but now I play them much better, and I think I'm playing my other pieces more confidently and accurately too.
It definitely strengthens your fingers, if nothing else.

That's interesting. What are they like musically? I just ordered the score from sheetmusicplus.

They have nothing to offer, musically. The excercises are strictly excercises, and Dohnanyi wrote a forward for the book explaining his intent.
The excercises are actually pretty awful-sounding, for the most part. But if you grit your teeth and concentrate solely on the technical aspects of the excercises then you'll get quite a lot out of it. I've been playing 13 years now, and I still feel like I have a lot to learn from Dohnanyi.

I started a thread on this a while back.

I think you will be very pleased with them. They are very useful. Here is a page of one of the exercises I have completed and mastered. It helped me alot with my hand and finger strength.

Where can you buy them? I want to try them, since I'm getting so bored with Pishna and Hanon.

I ordered exerciseds by Cortot, but they delibered Dohnanyi instead. They really do sound bad, but I guess I'll give them a go now.

Yes they have no musical value At all. But they are not intended to. In my opinion they are much more useful that Hannon (then again almost anything is).
