Hi,

I'm 18 and I've just started learning my grade 8. Here is the first piece I'm learning: Bach 'Capriccio in C minor'. I am self taught but really need a teacher ASAP.

Please provide a positive and negative comment so I can improve!

(NB: The end is missing as I still have to learn it)

You're playing's fine, but you should get a teacher.  I'm self taught too but I've had a teacher for the last 6 months and I just got 137 in my grade 8.  Just do what they say and you'll probably find that teaching yourself was for the best.  A lot of people who have always had teachers play nothing but exam music, lack independence and can't sight-read for toffee.  On another note I wouldn't reccomend playing the capriccio in your exam, it's by far the most popular choice and you don't get bonus marks for difficulty.

Thanks for your advice. I'll definitely seek a teacher very soon. Although I enjoy the Capriccio so I will play this in the exam once I eventually perfect the piece! :)

If your desire to learn and know more is so great that you can't feel content unless you continue playing the piano and studying music..THEN FORGE AHEAD.. Keep going.  Search and find a teacher...You will learn!   The payoff can last a lifetime.

It is of interest that some of the great pianists had moments of doubt..yet their desire soon put the doubt to rest.

I honestly can't tell if this is full of wrong notes, or if the piano is just way out of tune.  Either way, you need to make a serious change.

A lot of people who have always had teachers play nothing but exam music, lack independence and can't sight-read for toffee.

On the other hand - if you get a GOOD teacher, then you play nothing but exam music (if your intention is to sit exams), will gain independence and sight-read FAR better than you ever could.

And ramsay has a point - that piano is SERIOUSLY out of tune, so much that I'm not sure whether there were wrong notes, or if the piano was out of pitch.

Can you get a recording on a better piano???

Just a piece of advice not directly related to piano...

It is healthy to ask for opinions on playing (Is it good or bad?) but leave the decision to quit on yourself alone and nobody else.

A lot of people who have always had teachers play nothing but exam music, lack independence and can't sight-read for toffee.
And a lot of people who never had a teacher plays nothing, at all, since they are way too independet to finish any piece they ever start. As far as sight reading goes, they tend to use wrong accidentals, since they don't know or understand the system.
