Finally bought a piano... Now if only I could play it!
on: September 02, 2011, 07:22:08 PM
Hi everyone,
     Been playing around on and off my entire life with no formal training what-so -ever. I play a few other instruments and would like to take piano to the next level.  Would greatly appreciate any input on the best and most economical step to take next. Thank you.

Hi goldy. Congrats on owning a piano. Hopefully I can help you play it! I recently designed an 8 week online course to get people like you up and running fast. The link is:

Hope that can help!

Hi goldy54,

I have created a FREE online piano course for beginners just like you.

By the end of the course you will:

a) know the parts of the piano and how they work;
b) acquire the optimal hand position and technique that has been discovered during many years of teaching and researching different famous piano materials;
c) be able to play 4 piano pieces;
d) know all the main rhythm figures;
e) know how to use the pedal;
f) know the names of piano keys and the basic elements of reading sheet music.

Join the free course here: https://playingpianoblog.com/learn-to-play-the-piano/

Hope to see you soon :)

GL,
Jaak

Hi Jimbo, It's a Betsy Lynn (I never heard of it either) Got it at a half price sale at a thrift shop for only $50, bench included. Actually looks decent and seems to play well, needs to be tuned, which I already know will cost a lot more than the piano did. I'ts a start and I'm thrilled!

That one's new to me too but it's a start. I'm a digital player mostly but love gigs where there's a grand to play on. Lots of luck to ya. You sound enthusiastic and that's half the battle...

Can't beat $50, as long as the tuner says it's in good shape and will hold its pitch.  I move around a lot so I too have gone the digital route, getting into samples now.  I use NI's Akoustic Piano at home, mostly the sampled Steinway, but they have 3 other sampled pianos too. About as close to the real thing as digital can get.  They even sampled pedal noise.  I trigger it with my Kurzweil PC88, which has a pretty realistic action feel, so if I close my eyes, I can almost pretend it's a grand.  There are a few places in town I play where they have a real piano, one has a red Baldwin baby grand.  Nothing beats the real thing for sure. I recorded my album in a studio that had a Chickering 9 foot grand. Now THAT was heaven!

Keep us posted!
