suggestion for a modern piece
on: September 06, 2011, 03:43:11 AM
Hi guys!

I need your help for a modern piece to complete my repertoire.

Bach - partita no 5
Haydn- Sonata in E flat major no 52
Chopin- scherzo no 2
Liszt- un sospiro
Rach-prelude in g sharp minor
Schumann- piano concerto in a minor

Please suggest me a modern piece(include impressionism)(about 5-8 minutes ) to make a great contrast, cuz i have too much romantic....
i played some Debussy in the past year, i want to learn Ravel Jeux d'eau, but my teacher said it will be weird for my small hands and i should learn something really contemporain. I got some suggestion but don't like anyone of them. I have never been attractd to any after-impressionism work.
So can someone give me some advise, something not to tough to my ears? if it could be a composition by a Canadian, that's even better!

Thanks a lot!

Sorabji Piano Sonata no. 2

On off-chance that 1plus is not used to the "hilarious" in-jokes of these fora, Sorabji's second sonata is over fifty minutes long and not, I suspect, a serious recommendation.

You could try "L'Alouette Calandrelle" from Messiaen's Catalogue des Oiseaux. It's about six minutes long and very accessible if you like Impressionism.
In the interests of full disclosure: I do not play the piano (at all).

Impressionism would not count as modern, just think most of it had died by about 1920

Sorabji - Two piano pieces in the hothouse and Toccata

Ligeti - Etudes (or a selection the canon is nice)

Messiaen is also a good shout you could also try the preludes as well the 8th would be good

or you could go with Henri Dutilleux he was greatly influenced by Debussy I would recommend maybe the Preludes pour Piano as they're are only 3 and are about 7 minuets each (bar the 3rd which is longer)

Crumb - Makrokosmos you could do maybe a couple of them you certainly won't time to perform them all, maybe just go for the first

Ravel Tocatta from Le Tambeau de Caperan
Ginastera Danzas Argentinas op. 2
Scriabin Preludes op. 15
Shostakovick Prelude and Fuge no. 5

I think we need to set some parameters of what is going to be classed as modern, as again none of these composers (Bar Shostakovich and Ginastra) lived past 1955

Prokofiev - 1953
Ravel - 1937
Ginastra - 1983 but the example was composed in 1937
Scriabin - 1915!!!!????
Shostakovich - 1975 and again a most un-modern sounding piece try the 1st piano sonata

I would say the work would have to have been composed post-1960 at the earliest to be classed as anywhere near modern (I know some of my suggestions were pre 1960 but they sound considerably more modern than Ravel or Scriabin)

If you want something Canadian and you can play Jeux d' eau, you might want to check out the Ann Southam pieces that someone posted about in this forum about a week ago. They are contemporary all right, and very beautiful. The Eckhardt-Grammate sonatas would also qualify.

Perhaps you might want to consider something by either Hindemith or Poulenc.  They composed very contemporary pieces yet not nearly as harsh sounding as Bartok, Prokofiev or Shostakovich.....
Bach: Tocatta in D Minor  BWV 913
Busoni: Transcription of the Bach D minor Chaconne
Haydn: Piano Sonata Hob 16 no. 32 - B Minor
Balakirev: Nocturne #2 - B Minor
Prokofiev: Piano Sonata #1 - F Min
