Prokofiev sixth sonata
on: August 31, 2004, 05:03:34 AM
I don't mean to step on any toes here, but I think Prokofiev's sixth sonata is overrated.  I've listened to a number of performances, and to me anyway, I find it musically less satisfying than most of his other works.

What do you think of this piece?

I agree with Liszmaninopin! Although I haven't heard much of Prokofiev, I dislike the 6th sonata thoroughly! It is just because its extremely tough and generates big applauses that its popular. Something like Hammerklavier is much better; difficult and so good, musically!

If you dislike Prokofiev in general, maybe you should listen to the eighth sonata.  In my opinion, it's his greatest solo piano work-very musical.

I like the sixth sonata. It's violent, extremely cynical and even funny!

heh... I should play it!

hum... If someone dislikes Prokofiev, I don't see why the 8th sonata should be special... The first sonata maybe, because it does not really sound like Prokofiev, it's kinda "romantic".  But 8th... ???  :-/

Yeah, if you like it, you should go ahead and play it!

Well, I rather see your point-the 8th sonata is very complex and, I'd say, profound; however, I think the lyricism of many passages could be easily appreciated.  As for Prokofiev Sonatas, I also think of the third as fairly accessible, and also a fine piece of music.

I think Horowitz understands this piece very well - listen to his recording.

The second movement of this piece is especially beautiful and subtle.

The 8th is also my personal favorite; but I did enjoy playing the 6th.  The 4th is an underrated work, and of course the 3rd and 7th are immensely popular for good reason.
