Is it worth?
on: September 15, 2011, 08:04:29 AM
I am studying in an ordinary secondary school, and now I am sitting for the final examination, which will determine my class ranking for next year. For this reason, I have to cancel my piano class for this month, and have to even stop practise my piano... for making the last preparation in order to get flying colours in exam. I plan to recover my piano lessons and practice after september, do you think this is worth for the shot?

p/s: I am living in Malaysia and have to study 10 subjects in my form 4 study, this hardly leave me any space to breathe

You gotta do what you gotta do. I personally think schooling is more important than piano, especially in Malaysia where everything is dependent on getting excellent school grades. As you say, you can always pick it up again later. But continue to do some practice whenever you have some free time. You can run through some pieces that you like or enjoy playing. All study and no play makes "dave_clifford"..... a dull boy". Good luck.

I can't help myself laughing when I saw your comment, still I will study hard and prepare for the exam, after the exam, I will devote full attention in my piano study

Your's seems to be a case of First Things First?
I want to ask you...is music part of the curriculum in Malaysia?

More and more this day and age...music and visual art for that matter take a back seat to business education and math etc.  In order to make a decent living seems that those subjects take precedence.

Hopefully after you done with the tests etc.,   you will have a chance to decide where music fits into your life.  And "where" you want it to fit.

If you have a sincere love for music, I'd say start planning a place for it in your life and keep it there, regardless.  It has to do with what you NEED and WANT.

Ok heres the thing: try to practice the piano at least 10 or 15 mins. every day...this way you will keep your connection to the instrument and coming "back" to it will not prove as difficult a task.  I adivse playing scales, concentrate on listening for evenness and strive for that...all major one day..all minor the next (if you can)  You can elimnate duplication such as C# Major and D-flat Major i.e. only play that pattern once.  Play in tempo USE THE METRONOME!!, at whatever speed is comfortable.  Just that...If you don't finish them in 15 mins take up where you left off the next day. 15 MINUTES thats it.  When the 15 mins is up..STOP.   GOOD LUCK !!
