Good guide to finding a good used piano

This free guide covers all things to consider when viewing a secondhand piano, with a view to purchasing. Beautifully illustrated, with good tips to prevent buying a big lump of firewood!...

This outfit in N.J. is replacing every sound board in every piano and charging a premium price! Caveat emptor!
Plus, I put in a call to them to ask them if they ever get any early 1900 Knabes (because I wasn't finding ANY on the internet) and the girl on the phone was like, "We only deal with Steinways." Oh, excuse me, but on your website you have Knabes and she's like, OH! Needless to say, no one called me back but I would be suspect of anyone wanting to charge you 8 to 10K for a soundboard (much controversy on this subject) but it's the heart and soul of the piano and shouldn't just be removed for the sake of removing it. I contacted a restorer in my hometown of Erie, Pa, and he wanted to sell me a piece of crap Knabe 1928, not near the beauty of my 1901, for 5K (way overpriced) and then charge me a whopping 35K to restore it, so now we're into this piano for 40k! Are you kidding me? This is grand restored Steinway prices!
Plus, I would be on a waiting list and I wouldn't have the piano for two years. This is why you have to do your homework. I researched toilets for 40 hours before I bought my Totos for this house! HA!

Thx for sharing. Considering I'm very dumb in piano mechanics, I think I've learnt alot.

I saw an ad pop up for Lindeblad and I thought they posted the article. That's who I called in N.J., so I didn't want to discredit the company that posted the article. They have some beauitiful restored pianos, though, that Lindeblad but like I said, they are removing every soundboard in every piano.
CORRECTION:
UPDATE: My piano guy Clint said they do a fine job for a fine price! And I told him that they were replacing all of the soundboards and he said he didn't think so, so I rechecked their site and he's right and I"m wrong again! I just happened to click on all the Steinways that said new soundboards. Oh, well...
