I have tried several different pictures for my avatar but it won't let me use any of them. It says that it's not accepted.. or something about not being an avatar??

I think it only displays in your profile any way.  Not that big of a deal. 

It's probably some specific requirements for the picture size, x by y dimensions or a certain pixel amount.  Right click on someone else's pic and see if it tell under properties.
