file size too large?
on: October 05, 2011, 02:06:59 PM
Is there any way the file size could be increased for attachments? I tried to upload a file of this size:

17.5 MB (18,392,897 bytes)

And it said it was too large, though it says 20 mb is the max. This allows me to upload an improvisation of approx. 8-10 minutes at 192 kbps. Improvisations in many cases can be upwards of half an hour or 45 minutes, it would be nice to be able to share these without having to dramatically reduce the quality.

I understand if server space is at a premium...I think it is a quirk of the improvisations forum that it may need larger file attachment size. But as it is not as active as the rest of the site I also understand.

I would also be interested in such an increase in file size.  There are some long improvisations I have not uploaded here because compressing them to under 20 Mb would degrade the quality too far.  I'd also think this would be useful for those wishing to upload concertos in the main audition room, as these can also get quite lengthy.

Since we have recently moved to a more powerful server with more disk space available it has been possible to increase the file size limit to 35 Mb. But to faciliate for users on slower Internet connections it still make sense to try to keep the file size down by finding the optimal mp3-compression.

I am in sympathy with those who want to upload big files and equally thankful to our sysop for increasing the file size limit.

At some point there will be a physical limit to the file size.

For those that want to offer big files may I suggest a "home-grown" solution? There are manufacturers of network hard drives for home use (which you would attach to your router behind your internet gateway). The one I have also came with a feature to make it accessible from anywhere on the net. If I wish to give access to a file, my system generates a unique link which I quote. With a capacity of 2TB I have no limitations. In music terms that's 2,000,000 minutes of mp3!

Thanks for the increase. That is close to twenty minutes of 256kbps mp3, quite ample for anything I am ever likely to post.
