Flash Card Apps?
on: October 07, 2011, 04:51:59 PM
Do you use — and what sort of success have you had with, or can you recommend, any particular flash card app for note recognition? (I have an Android phone.)
Thanks.

My first music education app is exactly this- a flashcard app to drill treble and bass clef notes (up to two ledger lines). I designed it to be fun and challenging for kids aged 5 - 13 or so. I've gotten a lot of very good feedback from teachers and my own students really enjoy using it. I've gotten best success by having students practice on just a small segment of the staff at a time. Some things can only be mastered through repetition, but there ways to make it less of drudgery for children.
Currently, my app is iOS only, but I might look at porting it to the Android platform in the future. In the meantime, I have a few promo codes remaining to give away, so if there are any piano teachers here at Piano Street who would like try it out with their students, let me know and I'll get one out to you.

It's a note naming drill, it's a horse race, it's an app for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad!

After sending the OP, I found Music Flash Cards Pro on the Android Market. I have used it with all of my students, the younger boys enjoying it especially. It is fairly versatile, can set range from C below bass clef to Ab above treble; keys and accidentals, and has the option to use an adjustable timer. You can do individual notes, note names (for finding a key on the keyboard — for variety I had them alternate hands), and multiple choice.
