Student with Dyslexia
on: October 07, 2011, 07:04:58 PM
I am about to start a new 13 year old student who has dyslexia.

Has anyone had any experience with this and can you recommend teaching books and methods that would be good?

Thanks very much!

Dyslexia means having difficulty or an an inability to read words.  Do you know the nature of this dyslexia yet?

You would want to learn how sever the dyslexia. People with dyslexia have difficulty seeing reading symbols and translating it in their head. Basically sometime written symbols can appear jumbled. So I would suspect a method book would not work. You may have to get creative and teach concepts by rote and try and learn what goes on the students head with he or she sees written symbols. Some people flip letters around so maybe it would not affect music reading to severely.

I'd go by the nature, rather than severity, of the dyslexia.  If you know how the person processes things then you also know how to teach them.  If there is difficulty processing space (if you mix up p q b d) or sequencing (c then a then t for cat) these are two different things, though they could exist together.  The piano offers sound and touch. Dyslexia means an inability to read, but it doesn't tell us what is behind that inability.   The word is used for many things, and it is misused.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
