About how long till I could possibly play this?
on: October 17, 2011, 08:13:41 AM
or any other stuff R&B like boyz ii men, new edition, bobby brown, jodeci, Tony Toni Tone??

Just some background information on me I"m almost a complete beginner, I can read music a little and have been learning music theory for the last 2 weeks, I work on that about 1-2 hours a day because i think it should be the first step to learning the piano but maybe I'm wrong?

I'm also currently trying to memorize the 12 major chords[by playing them and listening to the individual notes that make up the chord] but i don't know if i should yet or not?

Also i can pick out some melody's by ear but i can't pick out chords by ear at all.
Basically at this point i want to learn piano enough to at least play the song i posted and others similar to it because i want to sing along to them and i love the music and from there move on to learning even more.

BTW I'm 19 years old and I'm self teaching myself and play on a Casio keyboard

In the video you posted the guy doesn't actually play the whole piece so it's difficult to say. Also I'm not experienced in playing the keyboard as I play the piano. Keyboards and pianos differ in the weight of the keys, sitting position, dynamic contrast, tone and number of keys among other things.

Anyway from what I understand it's just a bunch of chords and arpeggios if you get a teacher you can learn to play stuff like this pretty fast. I think I could play something like this, with ease ,3 years into my piano study so I'd use that as a rough estimate to the maximum amount of time it would take for the average person, minimum probably several months. These are all very rough estimates, best to get a teacher and ask them the same question.

[...] I'm self teaching myself [...]

Who else would you self-teach?
