The imortance of ABRSM exams?
on: October 19, 2011, 05:08:52 PM
Hi, I haven't been studying piano long (around 6 months) and I am just curious about whether piano exams are really important in studying piano? If I did decide to do an exam I would definitely wait until I have learned more. I am mostly curious, if these actually have any reason other than achievement. Thanks :)

I think there are several reasons why people take practical exams.

1.  Because the teacher suggests, recommends or naturally expects it
2.  Because each exam serves as a marker for the student's own progress and serves as a goal to work towards
3.  To allow a student to fully prepare pieces to performance standard
4.  To ensure a more full musical education which includes scales, performance, aural tests and sight reading
5.  To add onto a CV as proof of study
6.  To meet a requirement for university or music college entry

I'm sure there are more but these come instantly to mind.
