Questions regarding keyboards/midi
on: October 28, 2011, 09:58:24 AM
Sooo umm yeah, I juz started learning the keyboard on my own and have some questions. Currently I'm learning via synthesia and things have been going well...except for one thing.

I don't like the sound on my piano :\
No, this isn't about a low quality sounds or anything but the "voices" it came with just don't suit the songs I want to learn, if you've ever used synthesia then you would know what I mean. So I was wondering, if I bought a MIDI cable to connect it to my computer, can I adjust the sound of it? Cuz I seem to be unable to alter the sounds of the keyboard to my liking.

Hi. I work with MIDI a lot, but I really didn't understand your question. You are saying that the synthesia piano is not pleasing you? If you are using synthesia, you already got a midi keyboard/digital piano, right?

The piano sound isn't about the controller. I never used synthesia, but maybe you can change its sound someway.

Sorry if I didn't phrase it correctly, what I meant was that if I connected my keyboard to my computer via a MIDI cable, is it possible to alter the sounds/voices it produces through a program of any sorts?

What keyboard are you using? What sound are you looking for?
You can change what you're hearing by several different effecting software, hardware, amps and alike but not the original sound made by your keyboard...

If your keyboard has an USB output, just plug it on your computer..
Is it only has MIDI, buy a MIDI-USB cable. You can use a VSTi software with other piano sounds, like Pianoteq, TruePianos, Pianissimo, etc...

The sounds of your keyboard do not transmit through MIDI.  MIDI does not transmit digital audio.  It transmits musical information.  When you press a note on keyboard, MIDI transmits which note it is, the time at which it was pressed down, and the velocity with which it passed between 2 contacts.  That's the information that goes through MIDI, but not the sound from the instrument's sound engine.

So you can send MIDI to computer and have computer render it with the computer's own instruments.  No problem.  It sounds like this is what you want to do anyway.  But that sound cannot be sent back to the keyboard speakers through MIDI either.  It is the same deal in both directions.  If you want to send the actual sounds from one source to the other, you have to connect them with good old fashioned audio cables.
