Easiest of Bach's Preludes and Fugues?
on: October 31, 2011, 02:33:22 PM
I need to play a Prelude + Fugue, just any.

Which of them all is the easiest one?

Thanks in advance.

hmm easy and bach don't seem to belong in the same sentence. i honesty believe the works in wtc i and ii are all extremely difficult, even more so than some of the romantic variants, if you're not closed to considering other composers, how about the mendelssohn prelud e and fugue in e minor , i actually feel like this is easier to pull off (well) than any of the wtc works,

edubia: That that doesn't seem too hard.

enrique: I didn't ask for an easy prelude and fugue, I asked for the easiest. Big difference.

The Mendelssohn is too long. :(

No5 in D major, Bk 1. The fugue is easier than the prelude.
Funny? How? How am I funny?

my bad sorry for the misunderstanding, in that case i think the no 21 B flat major from wtc i is very approachable, sounds more brilliant than it is difficult to play vs others in the volume (there are easier preludes but the fugues are buggers as there are easier fugues with monstrous preludes, the B flat seems to strike a balance in technical without sounding sparse)

What about P&F in C major bk 1? the prelude is nearly a pushover. You just have to worry about the fugue. I don't think it is that hard either.

that's what i sort of mentioned in my response, its great when done right but man, that's the great 'stretto' fugue, 24 entrances of the theme make their presence known and it's very difficult to weave all all together with continuity and evolving tension (that is varying  senses of importance), it's great fun, but i remember, it took me forever to learn that thing...

According to the syllabus put out by RCM, which has now partnered with Carnegie Hall to create "The Achievement Program," the easiest is WTC I C minor, listed as a grade 9 piece.

The Grade 10 Prelude and Fugues are listed as:
WTC I
D
Dm
E
Em
F
F#
F#m
Gm
Ab
G#m
Bb
B

WTC II
C
Cm
C#m
Dm
Eb
D#m
E
Em
Fm
G
A
Am
Bm

The rest are ARCT, which is the most difficult level.

Hope that helps!

I actually just started my first Prelude & Fugue. It is no.6, in d minor from book I. I believe that one is one of the easiest. c minor from book I and G Major from book II are also good ones to start with.
