Digital Piano out of tune??
on: November 02, 2011, 03:27:51 AM
I was playing my piano today and ended up playing a few single notes and just holding them. They all have this weird reverberation that makes me think it's out of tune. At least when I played trumpet that reverberation was exactly what we tried to eliminate when tuning. To be more detailed, I'll play a note and initially I think it sounds fine (I've never thought I have the greatest ear so who knows), but after half a second you it will go up in pitch a little then back down below the note and bounce back and forth pretty slowly.

I might try to get a tuner if I really care.. or borrow one.

Anyone ever heard of this happening?

I would look into the possibility of the contacts under the keys being dusty...

Digital instruments do not go out of tune.  It sounds like there is a vibrato or other sort of modulation which is either recorded in the sample or being applied through an effect.

Well, I listened again yesterday and I definitely feel like the effect was a lot less, but still present. The day I thought I heard it sounding really weird I had played for at least 2-3 hours on a baby grand that is probably slightly out of tune.. maybe my ears just adjusted to that making my piano sound off.

@jimbo320: I'm not sure if you mean something more the what piano I have, but it's a casio ps-20.. although today I remembered (while looking into why the headphones buzz) that I'm not using the right casio power adapter (bought the piano in Ecuador....). I think I'll try getting the right one.. either to see if helps this or the headphone buzzing.

@nystul: I'll take a look at the settings and make sure they're all at the default.. I remember playing around them years ago and getting lots of weird reverberation but haven't touched them since..

Thanks for the ideas
