Is it wrong to create a melody with the left hand?
on: November 07, 2011, 12:29:00 AM
Hi, I've recently just been playing around with attempting to make some of my own little pieces just for personal enjoyment and since I'm left handed I tend to prefer to make melodies with that hand instead of the right. Is this a technical mistake or just something that isn't normally done?

Of course not to both questions. Invent anything with either hand and with any fingers at any time. I wasn't aware that it isn't normally done, although admittedly many jazz pianists in particular tend to think through their right hands. I have found the ability to hear and think through both hands vital to fluency in improvisation, not just for melody but for everything.

It is Ok to create melodies with the left hand. You have been left thinking about this question because most of the pieces you (and I) play mostly have melodies in the right hand. It is even possible to pass the melody from the left to right, and vice versa. I've once been pondering this very question.

Certainly not! In fact, that is a great thing to do, and a wonderful way to improve your piano playing skills! And it also makes boring pieces sound much better! Keep up with the good work!
