Am I INSANE?
on: November 08, 2011, 02:42:35 AM
I have been playing piano for the past 6 or 7 weeks. I have fallen in love with Debussy's First Arabesque. I decided that I wanted to learn how to play it. I have been doing well, I have made it to what I have come to know as the great ascension. I was wondering if I should have stayed away from an intermediate composition? Does my past experience with the banjo put me at any edge with this instrument? How long should it take to learn this piece? Will choosing this piece harm my piano playing in the future? The reason I am asking is that most everyone has told me that I shouldn't have started out playing this piece. I am afraid that I am taking to much on, from other people have told me. I have been told that this piece is very difficult, but it seems so easy for me to understand the movements. I am not looking for a complement or praise, I am truly concerned that I am not following good guidelines  :-[ . I want the opinion of an experienced player, or really anyone for that matter.

Hi,

In my opinion its your choice of what you play. Yes, maybe it is more than you can chew, but DON'T GIVE UP! I would suggest choosing other PS pieces, and slowly work your way up to the one's you want to play. And it cannot damage your playing in any way as you will just be progressing your reading skills even further sooner! (Hope this helps!) Good Luck and have fun!  :)

Thanks. This piece is so much fun to play! I am so glad to get some encouragement for a change. I learned the parts that I know within three days, I havn't been able to practice  the amount that I want to, but I really feel that I am learning some neat things, and  having a ball while doing it. Thankyou for the support. I am also about half-way through Clair-de-lune but havn't told anyone this till now. Is this also too advanced for me?

Sorry I haven't replied for ages.
Clair-de-Lune is a beautiful piece of music too.
Just learn what pieces you feel comfortable learning, it does not matter in ANY way what pieces you learn, who cares what other people think? ;) You can learn anything you put your mind to.
Good Luck learning them all! ;D
