Catoire Prelude in E minor, Op. 17, 2
on: November 11, 2011, 05:27:52 AM
This rich, nostalgic piece is perhaps my favorite of the Catoire I've heard.  I'm thankful to Rachfan for discovering this wonderful composer.

It's good to be back in the audition room.

Hope you enjoy.  Comments welcome. :)

What a lovely piece. Thank you for posting. This sounds like the kind of piece I can just fall in love with. Just immersing yourself in the harmonies and letting them wash over you. I could find things  to suggest but it would all be artistic and well, it would ruin my mood from listening to this. So nicely done and post more.

Hi goldentone,

What a wonderful surprise!  I really enjoyed your fine playing of this gorgeous piece.  And the difference in interpretations between our respective renditions shows some of the range of possibilities in presenting this music.  Most of all, it's great to have another pianist here at Piano Street increasing awareness of Georgy Catoire, a truly extraordinary but generally overlooked composer.  Thanks for sharing your recording with us!  :)

What a nice piece and playing, thanks to you and to Rachfan for introducing me to Georgy Catoire!  This is music I definitely relate to very much, and there is a very nice freedom in your playing - that is nice to hear :).

Definitely would love to hear more Catoire and more playing from you.

Very beautiful, Goldy :) your voicing is clear (which is not easy to manage in this piece) and the buildup is dynamically well proportioned!

Hi David,

I am thrilled that you liked it!  I admit I was a little nervous since you know Catoire's music so well.  I'm glad to be a fellow Catoire exponent and give you an opportunity to hear another's interpretation of his unique music.  This certainly will not be the last Catoire I post.  Your response means a lot.

Hi goldentone,

You're entirely welcome!  From the very beginning of my work on Catoire's piano literature, my hope was always to raise awareness and persuade other pianists to take up the cause of this extraordinary music of an unjustly neglected and nearly forgotten composer.  Now with your assist, the project no longer feels like rolling a boulder uphill.  So yes, I'm delighted that you'll be exploring this repertoire!  :)

Welcome to the world of Catoire. :)

I'm glad you liked the piece, Karli, and my playing, and I'm happy to hear that you relate to it; I wasn't sure what you would think of him.  It took me awhile to process Catoire when David began recording his works, but I have fallen in love with his music.  I do share David's desire to make him known to the world.

Thank you very much, Wolfi! :)  I appreciate your feedback very much.  It lets me know my musicianship is on the right track.  The voicing was indeed a challenge--the world of Catoire.

This is very enjoyable, thank you for sharing it.  Now I need to go back to David's recording and compare the two...it's always a joy to me to listen to two very different interpretations of a piece by great artists, I always end up learning so much more about the music when I do.
