Mozart Sonata K330 3rd Movement
on: November 11, 2011, 06:35:30 AM
Hi,

Here is my latest rendition of the 3rd movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata in C Major K330. Would love to hear any comments - good or bad. I'm working on the whole Sonata but will perform only this movement at my upcoming recital.

I don't know why, but it's impossible for me to get through the whole thing without a few mistakes. I messed up in a few places, and tried to keep going. If I recorded again, I would play those parts fine and just mess up somewhere else.  ::)

Played on a Kawai Grand and recorded with my phone.

Thanks for listening!

Tempo slightly rushed at the end of the development. I found myself tapping my fingers faster and when you returned to the recapitulation, my tapping finger slowed down.

Rhythm is well managed, although sort of rushed in some areas. Triplet semiquaver rhythm felt rushed IMO.

The interpretation is good, although I feel like you can do more with the music. You have the right ideas and it's well on the way. Look forward to hearing you play the whole sonata.
Perfection itself is imperfection.

Hi : Ok got a few minutes. The beginning was fine , but I would like to talk about starting measure 16. After the first triplet the sliding of the thumb up to the C is where it sounds like your problems begin. First you have to get that C clearly  snap up to the G and back down to the E Before you begin the short scale down starting on high C . Also very important to release the left hand after the first beat. The next measure will be fine if you fix this measure. IN the next measure the left hand entry after the first eight note is super important. It is almost a counter melody of its own going against the right hand. Plus make sure the G quarter note on the second beat is held while you move from the CE to the DF. Then regardless if the music says so or not, don't play the next two measures as an exact repeat of these two measures. Perhaps a little softer , just not an exact duplicate. This is only a few measures but its the very heart of what Mozart is about. I think if you fix these few measures then you are pretty set to get thru the first opening section.

All in all , i liked very much what you have done here. Your trill work surprised me as to how well you handled it. Your pedaling seemed spot on. Your tempo was perhaps a hair pushed and as your skill develops experiment with a slightly lighter touch. All in all though a very pleasant experience listening to this.

Thanks so much for the post.

I enjoyed your rendition of this Mozart Sonata very much.   Perhaps, as others have said before a little rushed in parts but over I thought it a delightful interpretation and performance.

Well Done!

Can't suggest anything else technical, as it seems to have covered already!  I did enjoy your performance, despite the errors.

Just for fun I downloaded this and added some reverb , as if it was performed in the Ulm Chapel - your piano sounded really awesome. Actually your room has very pleasant acoustics -and you must have a very good microphone on your phone!  The recording is very good.

Hope you don't mind - if you would like a copy, let me know!
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

Thanks for listening and thanks for the comments, everyone!

danhuyle, yes I tend to rush. It's a problem for me. Thanks for pointing out where it was speeding up. Usually, I can fix it once I'm aware - then, as I'm playing, I almost have to think about slowing down, but really it's staying the same. I will work on that section. About the triplets - I went back and listened after you mentioned it, and you are right. It's a relief actually, because it'll be easier to play if I slow it down a bit. Thanks for the advice.

kellyc, if you are still here, I appreciate your comments. I like the detailed advice you gave. I will try what you suggested in those measures. I especially like your idea to play the repeat differently. Horowitz does that, and I love it. Thanks for complimenting my trills. With the 3 and 4 fingers, it was not easy to get. Pedaling - I only used it a couple of times, to connect phrases when my hands had to jump. I'm glad you liked it. :) Again, thanks for the comments.

gerda64, I'm glad you liked it and thanks for commenting!  ;D

starstruck5, thanks for commenting and yes! I would love to hear what you did with my recording! The piano I played on is not mine. It's a fairly new and well-cared for grand at my church. I opened the lid and put the mic a few feet away. The acoustics in the chapel are amazing. I sneak in there and play as much as I can. It has a beautiful sound.
