Despite my years of playing piano....
on: November 11, 2011, 04:58:28 PM
Hi,

I have been playing piano more than 9 years.  I am what you may call amateur because I studied another career.

Despite playing for 9 years, I feel sometimes that I have many gaps in my technique, that I haven't dominate the basic.

I returned to play the Hanon lessons, I am with Bach's Inventions 1, 4, 7 and sooner with the 8th one. I am learning Chopin's Prelude "Raindrops" and another piece from book 3 of Thompson's.

In theory, I know by heart the scales, the key signatures, the clefs, and how to transcribe from one instrument to another.

Why do I feel that it is not enough?, what is considered to be the basic principles on playing piano?

After 9 years of knowing the mechanics and theory your question escapes me...

for me the principales is turning emotion into music. i am also playing for 9 years (i am 16)

it seems for me that for you it is more important to know all theoretics. loose control and try to compose on yourself!

Hi: Part of what you might be feeling is a factor of human nature. No matter what we have it is the stuff we don't that we are after. No matter where you are on the mountain of musical achievement there is always , always another plateau to conquer. Try and continue to progress , but take the time to enjoy what you already have.

It natural to feel that we have not accomplished something and that we would want to do everything to the best of our ability. Just try harder and like Kellyc said, enjoy what you have.
Funny? How? How am I funny?

I've been playing piano for 15 years (stopped playing for 2 years) and I still call myself an amateur. I started playing in 1996.

My first 8 years I never played with a metronome and I had no idea what I was doing. In fact in 2005, I was worried that I couldn't get through the technical difficulties of virtuoso pieces and my rhythm was terrible.

I was clueless on what I was doing for the first 7 years of playing piano. In 2006, I found myself being able to get through the technical hurdles of virtuoso pieces, yet there's still something missing.
In 2007, I had to learn how to count and how to control rhythm. It was very challenging for me at the time. To be able to play the right notes, rhythm, count and internalize rhythm was the main difficulty I had with piano.
In 2011, I started playing piano...again. My rhythm is a lot more controlled, I'm no longer concerned about the technical difficulties of virtuoso pieces after I was able to get through the techincal hurdles of a piece I struggled with in 2006.

The basic piano principles are -
interpretation
Turning scales and arpeggios into art

The ultimate goal of music is to be able to express yourself to the world.
Perfection itself is imperfection.
