Schumann's editing
on: November 12, 2011, 10:18:10 PM
Hello,
Does anyone know exactly how many of Robert Schumann's piano works were edited by Clara? I'm also interested in researching works of Robert's that quote material from Clara.
Thanks!

I think most of them. And she really did a job on his works, believe me. And I don't mean that in a nice way. She was apparently embarrassed by her husband's romanticism and tried to "tone it down."
For example, if you look at the Fantasy in C, the piece as usually played has a conventional, ho-hum ending. But in the original autograph copy, the end of the last movement is similar to the ending of the first movement, with its quote of Beethoven, and the pianissimo chords in the treble. A very unconventional ending, but it changes the meaning of the whole piece. This is the way it should always be played, but you won't find that ending anywhere except, I think, in the Henle edition.
