Chopin Etude or Rachmaninoff Moment Musical
on: November 14, 2011, 03:08:38 AM
Hi all,

I would like to add speed to my left hand. I am therefore considering the following two pieces that I really like:
-Chopin Etude 10 12 (Revolutionary)
-Rachmaninoff Moment Musical 4

Both will make me work on relentless and quick movements of the left hand.
So far, I just read the first two pages of Rachmaninoff's and it is not so hard although the left hand jumps are hard to get in tempo. The second section with the uncoordinated arpeggios at both hands might be more tricky.
I didn't try Chopin!

As I used to play some Rachmaninoff, I am neither afraid of chords (end of prelude 3 2, second part of Schultz' arrangement of the 18th variation) nor jumps (prelude 23 5), and as I want to learn one more lyrical piece at the same time, I would prefer to focus only on one of these two pieces.

So what could you advise me?

Thank you in advance,

_Nisa_

They seem very similar in difficultly so just choose the one that sounds better to you, or better yet, learn both!
While you're at it you could try Liszt's Transcendental Etude 10, Un Sospiro and some Beethoven/Mozart Sonatas.

If you do choose to tackle the Moment Musical ensure that during your slow practice your left hand motions are fluid and even, don't be so forceful when depressing the keys and keep your up/down hand motions (or hand waving) to a minimum. I think you'll find that this will make the transition from practice speed to performance speed much smoother.

Hey,

Thanks for your reply and the very much appreciated advice.

As I said, I will try to work on 2 pieces at a time, a more slower one (Schubert Op 90 No 4 or Rachmaninoff Op 32 No 10) and the left hand one, so learning both Chopin Etude and Rachmaninoff Moment Musical at the same time would be a bit too demanding (even without the slower piece).

Any other recommendations?
Any hints for these pieces?
