pricing used Yamaha U1
on: November 15, 2011, 09:03:04 PM
I am interested in buying a new or used piano for about $6000 to $8000.  The local store has a 5-year-old Yamaha U1 with a price tag of $8,200 and a willingness to sell for $7000 with no haggling but I can't tell if that's a good price. Help, please

Usually what I think is that a used piano might be better than a fresh new piano. What I mean is that it will be easier to play.  :-\ When my piano was bought it costed I think 5-6K. So therefore I think 7k wouldn't be too bad but try to get a bargain if possible. Also it may depend on the quality of the piano.
Funny? How? How am I funny?

Currently that translates to £4,432 (GBP) from $7,000 (USD).

I would say that is a fair price. We sell new U1s for £6,000 (~$9,918 USD). 5 years is hardly anything on a new piano if it has had little use and has been looked after. More importantly, if the dealer has serviced it well and is guaranteeing it for 5 years. Represents a good saving if all is in order.

If you're in the US, then there probably isn't a new Yamaha P121 available. This is built in the Jakarta factory - by Yamaha - and is every bit as good as a U1, but with a Bavarian Spruce soundboard (solid) and classic cabinet styling. It doesn't have a soft close fall (keyboard lid) nor does it have a fall lock. We sell these new for £4,800 ($7569 USD). It doesn't change the value of the 5 yr old U1. If it is available to you, then I would consider it, as I feel a brand new P121 is free from compromise, has attractive cabinet styling (subjective) plus it is new in every respect - and very close in price to the value of a young pre-owned U1.

Specification, other's opinions/reviews and brochure descriptions aside - if you really like the piano and are happy with everything -then buy it. Noone can really tell you what is best for you until you feel that yourself.

$7000 is a good price. I have a U1 I bought new a few years ago for $5500, but that was a huge discount because I'm a teacher in the area and I knew the dealer =)
